The FDA announced on Friday, Nov. 6 that website operators could face criminal charges if they continue ignoring the ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products online. Letters were send to web operators to remind them of the ban and to stop the sale of flavored cigarettes which health officials believe is targeting the young and inexperienced smokers. Fourteen companies received the warning letter, they have until Nov. 21 or Nov. 22 to stop selling tobaccos with added apple, chocolate, clove, lemon, strawberry and other fruit or spice flavors online. The said ban took effect on Sept. 22, 2009, under the provisions of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

Research shows that 17 year old smokers are 3 times as likely to be a smoker of flavored cigarettes than those who are 25 or older. Nearly 90% of smokers began their smoking habit as a teen, health officials is expecting as many as 3,600 teens will be prevented from being smokers each day with the ban in effect.

The FDA banned the sale of anything which is fruit, candy, or clove flavored in September with the claim that such products could lead teens and children to start smoking and act as enticing products to draw in new smokers.
